Welcome to e-startup.org, the European Business School's (ebs) research project on Internet/E-Commerce Startups in Germany.

As in most other parts of the world, new business opportunities created by the Internet have led to high rates of new business formation in Germany. But - where is this new industry about to locate? Will the "virtual" dot-coms locate evenly in space or will they create new regional clusters like the famous and often cited Silicon Valley? Seeing the growth potential and prestige of the industry, Germany's established high-tech regions are already competing fiercely to attract new ideas and talent in this field.

E-Startup.org plans to describe the patterns of business formation in Internet/E-Commerce by collecting and analysing relevant data from about 8-10.000 German startups (an estimated 70-80% of the total). As a second step the project will try to find empirical proof for the existence of regional clusters or agglomerations. It will discuss the reasons and dynamics of their formation. Based on a high-level cross-country comparison with the U.S. and Japan the project finally wants to identify opportunities for action from the perspective of a regional planner.
